An SUV we didn’t expect but, in a market dominated by SUVs, someone had to challenge the king, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
Back in 1967, Toyota celebrated its founder Sakichi Toyoda 100th birthday by naming the companies most luxurious vehicle, the Century. This 4-door sedan was primarily used by the Prime Minister, senior government leaders and high-level business executives of Japan. Pretty much the Rolls-Royce of Japan, but in today’s world, the century name is being challenged.
So, on September 6, 2023, Toyota unveiled the Century SUV and began taking orders that same day. While being built in Japan for right hand drive, a left-hand drive version for the Chinese-market will be sold through Lexus dealers as an import. Which is only the second time a Century model has been sold outside of Japan.
Powertrain:
This exclusive SUV shares a few things with its close’s relatives, the Toyota Grand Highlander and Lexus TX. The GA-K platform and hybrid motor just to name a couple. Speaking of motor, this SUV is powered by a 3.5L Hybrid V6 putting out 259hp. Being that AWD is standard, a rear electric motor producing 75kw(101hp) and a front motor producing 133kw(179hp), gives this vehicle a combined output of 404hp. All this powertrain tech gives the passengers a comfortable yet reliable ride, but this vehicle is to be chauffeured.
Interior and Features:
This vehicle is not to be underestimated. With features such as fully reclining rear captain seats and rear doors that open up 75 degrees wide, you will look like someone of importance stepping out. But Toyota kept to its roots and culture. Designers worked with a musical instrument maker to perfectly tune the cabins acoustics, to sound as if you are at a live performance. Different textures, materials and finishes truly represent cultural and native items. If that’s not enough, Toyota offers customization of the Century with the help of Century Meisters. A small team of specialist who can incorporate features and finishes that the customer heart desires.

A sportier version with sliding rear doors, side skirts, lower front and rear diffusers, was unveiled the same day. All this can be yours with a starting price of $170,000. Not too bad for a Rolls Royce Cullinan rival.
